Congratulations to Darrel Leimback AVERY M3 Control Sponsored Player

DL GoldCongrats to Darrel Leimback Sponsored AVERY M3 Control Player. Darrel finished First at the 2011 National Senior Summer Games in Houston last week.  Gold Medal in the Men’s 50-54 category and Silver in the 50’s mixed.  Darrel said, “What a great week of tennis, looking forward to qualifying and going to the 2013 games in Cleveland.”

Does Your Racquet Have Enough Weight?

The other day I was giving a lesson to a student who uses the AVERY M3 Power.  He popped a string in his AVERY so he picked up what he had in his bag, one of his old lightweights, I won’t mention the brand because it doesn’t matter, lightweights period, simply do not get the job done.  After hitting for a while with the lightweight he said, and I quote, “Wow, what a difference, this racquet just does not ‘plough through’ the contact point, and the ball feels heavy on my strings, I could never play with a lightweight again”. The phrase ‘plough through’ means that the racquet maintains it’s speed through contact and crushes the ball, not the other way around.  It’s an interesting comment he made, one that is heard by players who recognize the benefits of a racquet that has ENOUGH WEIGHT.

The reason I say ‘enough weight’ is because if your racquet does not have ‘enough’ it creates problems.  First of all, when racquet and ball collide, if there is not enough weight the racquet slows down, because there is not enough weight to plough through the ball.  A tennis ball weighs in at 57 grams, sure, doesn’t sound so heavy, but as my student commented it sure feels heavy when you’re playing with a lightweight, after experiencing what excellent plough through feels like.  The negative effect of this slowing down is twofold, 1.) the shot you just hit has less pace, depth and spin, and 2.) when the racquet slows your arm is taking the stress and absorbing the shock.  Ever notice how many players are using elbow and wrist braces?  Lightweights, are the number one cause.

I’ve been involved in tennis over 35 years and I’ve seen many racquets.  What determines a solid performer from a dud is not necessarily O holes, nano technology, or any other marketing hype.  It’s determined by it’s performance.  The 3 models of AVERY Racquets are all solid performers, they all have enough weight for excellent plough through and arm protection. This in turn, provides excellent pace, depth and spin and a more comfortable feel at contact.  They even have an added benefit of helping you be more consistent.  WHY?  Because you do not have to swing as fast to get the same power you would with a lightweight.  When you slow your swing down a little, consistency improves.

BUY AN AVERY and GET a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee!

That’s right.  I am so confident in the performance of AVERY Racquets if you are not completely satisfied with your purchase, I will return the full racquet price NO Questions asked.

The following are my recommendations:

The AVERY M3 Control This is one for the purists. Offers excellent control and a classic player’s racquet feel. This racquet is for big hitters looking more for control.  If you take a big swing at the ball and lack control, this is the ultimate control racquet.

The AVERY M3 Power

A hefty player’s racquet that offers power by placing plenty of mass behind the ball. Offers excellent stability, comfort and control.  This racquet has some pop.  If control is not an issue and you want more power this is your frame.  More kick on topspin serves and more bite on slice backhands.

The AVERY M5

A classic oversize player’s racquet. Offers a high level of control with the added benefit of a more forgiving oversize stringbed.  If you’re an older player and you’ve lost some power over the years the M5 is a good choice.  The larger stringbed (more trampoline effect) offers more power, still easy to manuever and excellent arm protection.

Stringing Options for the Racquets

If you’re not sure what string would be best here are my recommendations.  If you have no arm problems the Genesis Typhoon is a very good control oriented Co Poly that you can string as low as 40 lbs.  If you’ve had arm issues or just like a real soft string the Genesis Xplosion is close to Natural Gut without the price.

If you’re not sure which racquet would suit your game, give me a call and I’ll advise which is best for you.

All the best and happy hitting,
Tom

Why Are AVERY Racquets Considered “Real Racquets”?

You’ll here tennis announcers frequently say, “They hit the ball so hard today, yeah, it’s that modern technology, light racquets, and the strings have increased the speed at which players can now hit.”  But, is that really the case?  Personally, I don’t buy it.  Granted, the new strings have enabled players to take huge cuts at ball and still maintain control, and that fact, taking huge cuts at the ball, is more of a factor than light racquets.  Have any of those announcers ever really checked on what the pros racquets weigh?  I doubt it.  The pros racquets are usually much more, I know for a fact that most pros racquets are customized and weigh a lot more than the same racquet bought off the shelf at the local tennis shop.  As an example a buddy of mine who strings at Grand Slams told me the Bryan brothers racquets weigh in at 16 oz. and are 16 points head light.  I’ve heard of many pro players with racquets in the 13 – 14 oz. range but never 16 before. Yet, it makes sense the Bryan’s are big guys, plenty of weight to get the job done, but head light and easy to maneuver, perfect for doubles.  Also, I think it’s more a matter of size and strength of the players and especially the technique used by modern players.  As an example, compare the technique of Jimmy Connors (racquet straight back and high finish) and Novak Djokovich (big loopy backswing, coming off the ground at contact, and roundhouse finish).  The difference in swing speed is huge.  I really think this is the main reason for the speed of todays game, also, the players are fitter and stronger.  Also, there are still world class players such as Juan Carlos Ferrero, Vince Spadea and others who play with racquets that came out 20-25 years ago and are basically the same except for some minor graphics.

Of course, you probably realize by now I’m going to make a pitch for AVERY Racquets.  The truth is I’ll put them up against anything on the market, they are solid performers, all three models.  These frames are on the same level as all the major companies top level racquets, which they promote mainly to the 4.0 and up players.  The racquets sold by the major companies for the lower level players such as 2.0 – 3.0 level, are in my opinion, not racquets that help a player develop, and are not safe for the wrist, elbow, and shoulder.  Even if you are a 2.0 – 3.5 player don’t make the mistake of buying the major companies recommended frame for a 2.0-3.5 player, they’re usually more expensive, and not something you can grow with and protect your arm.  You’d be much better served buying one of the frames recommended for a 4.5 and up, then you will have a racquet you can use for years, grow with as a player, no need to move up to a better frame as your level improves, and a racquet that will protect your arm.  Or consider buying an AVERY, which fall into the same category,  you’ll have a frame you can use for years, will help you develop as a player, and protect your arm.  They can be demoed through Tennis Warehouse.com or purchased directly at AVERY Racquets.com
I also do custom stringing as well.

AVERY Racquets are “Real Racquets”

First, and foremost, because they allow you to play to your potential and to keep improving and growing as a player.

Second, they are arm friendly, very comfortable at contact, they absorb the shock of ball, racquet, collision, giving you superior arm protection.

Third, they also allow you to hit the heavy ball, with pace , spin and depth to your opponents side, making it more difficult for him.
